Theory of human ecology

Where could the ecological process of invasion, dominance and succession be found?
In societies with both groups of people and industry
Clifford Shaw and Henry McKay
Used cultural transmission theory to explain why neighborhood crime rates persisted over decades even when the population of the neighborhood changed
Clifford shaw and Henry Mckay
studied the process by which "detachment from conveventiaonal groups" occurred
What are the three facets of a community that influenced detachment according to Clifford Shaw and Henry Mckay?
Physical status, economic status, and population composition
Low economic status in detachment
Poverty= no local programs, not many successful business
families on welfare, the median rental and the percentage of families owning homes.
hightest rate of infant death.
highest rates of TB and insanity.
Physical Status in detachment
Broke down buildings, bars on windows, Garbage in streets
located within areas of heacy industry or commerce.
popluation change assumed to be related to an indstrial invasion-resulted infewer buildings for residential occupation.
Population compositon in detachment
"Korea town" ethic complave of a disconnect of this population from the rest of the town.
Was not the people themselves bc after a race of people would move out the diliquency would stay the same and the it would not follow the people into their new place.
Delinquency areas
Shaw and McKay noticed delinquency rates varied by area not by racial, national or nativity characteristics of the people.
Thus, deliquency was due to each groups geographical diatribution within the city, not racial, national, or natice pathology
Crime locates itself where?
In certain areas in the city. certain culture or people are not the cause of crime it is the geographical area.
Shaw concluded what about invasion
when a particular location in the city is invaded by new residents, the established symbiotic relationships that bind that location to a natural area are destroyed.
ultimately this location will be incorproated as an organic part of a new natural area, and the social equilibrium will be restored
meanwhile the natural organization of the location will be severely impaired.
What is a symbiotic relationship
are relationships that both parties benefit from each other
