The Alien and Sedition Acts
acts passed in 1798 under the Adams Administration. Alien act stripped foreigners of their rights to vote, authority to kick out any foreigners who he deemed threatening to society. Sedition act stripped citizens of their right to rebel or speak out against their government.

The purchase of LA. Thomas Jefferson, doubled the size of the country. Bought from France, 1804. (We did not know what to do with the land).

The Monroe Doctrine
What would foreign policy said. "We will NOT let other countries colonize in the Central America."
A key foreign policy made by President Monroe in 1823. It declared the western hemisphere off limits to new European colonization and in return, the US promised not to meddle in European affairs.

The Hartford Convention
A gathering of New England Federalists from 1814 to 1815 to oppose the war of 1812. May have regarded the meeting as preparatory to a secession movement by the New England colonies. It did not work.

A war between the United States and Britain the resulted because of capturing naval vessels and Native Americans problems blamed on Britain, 1812-1815.
The "Corrupt Bargain"
Name for the deal struck between Adams and Clay that if Adams makes Clay Secretary of State, Adams will be guaranteed victory. Election of 1824.

Indian Removal Act
The act to move the Cherokee off the southern land and move them west, because they settled on some of the most fertile land. 1830
Worcester Vs. Georgia
Cherokee appealed to supreme court to stop white invasion into Cherokee nation; Marshall ruled in indians favor saying that only federal govt could do that and states had no authority over tribes.
Treaty of Echota
Signed by only 500 Cherokee Indians who were bribed saying that all 17,000 Cherokee's must leave within 2 years to go to land in Louisiana Territory. If not they would be forced to leave by the United States Army on the Trail of Tears, 1835.
The Trails of Tears
It was a forced migration of indians west my military troops. Many died of starvation and disease, 1831.
The Importance of the Election of 1800
First time there was no Electoral College majority. HOR elects Jefferson.
Leads to 12th amendment which changes how Presidents and VPs are elected: a ticket for P and VP.
Power goes from one party to another, Fed to Dem Repub.
Also leads to Hamilton Burr Duel, killing Hamilton.

Country doubled in size.
Did not know whether the new land would be slave or free.

British attacked and impressed American merchants.
Chesapeake Incident: British demand to board US ships to search for deserters, results in battle.
Embargo Act 1807: stops trade with Europe and makes them mad.
British supplied arms to Indians, used to attack US settlements.
