Science unit three review (chapters 7 & 10 of integrated science book)
Terms in this set (17)
What is a chemical reaction
a process that involves rearrangement of the molecular or ionic structure of a substance, as opposed to a change in physical form or a nuclear reaction.
,Chemical reactions occur when substances go through chemical changes to form new substances
What are the major signs of a chemical reaction.
Words used for a chemical reaction are grow, ripen, decay, ans burn. When you see these words you know a chemical reaction will take place.
Something new is visibly produced
A gas is created
Heat is given off or taken in
What are the four types off energy that can be produced by a chemical reaction?
1. energy in the form of heat 2. energy in the form of light (photons) 3. energy in the form of radiated particles (such as fission) 4. energy in the form of released electrons (electricity)
What is a chemical equation? Where would you find the reactants? The products?
A representation of a chemical reaction that uses symbols to show the relationship between the reactants and the products.
The reactants are on the left side of the arrow and the products are on the right side of the arrow.
What is an exothermic reaction? Give an example
A chemical reaction in which energy is released to the surrounding as heat. Similar to a combustion reaction
What is an endothermic reaction? Give example
A chemical reaction that requires energy impute
Why do we balance chemical formulas?
So that both sides are equal and no side is unstable
Define the conservation laws
Any law staying that some quantity or property remains constant during and after an interaction or process.
What are the products of a combustion reaction? What is a combustion reaction?
Oxygen is a reactant on every combustion reaction, so at least one product of such a reduction will contain atoms of oxygen. Water is a common product of a combustion reaction.
A combustion reaction of an organic compound, in which heat is released
What happens when an element undergoes radioactive decay?
After radioactive decay, the element changes into a different isotope of the same element or into an entirely different element.
What are the four types of radiation?
What is the symbol for alpha and beta particles?
Alpha particles, beta particles, gamma rays, and neutrons.
Alpha is 4over2 He
Beta is 0over-1 e
What is a half life?
The time in which it takes for half of a radioactive substance to decay.
What is released when heavy atoms split?
Large amounts of energy
What is fission?
The process in which light nuclei splits into two or more fragments and releases neutrons and energy
What does the equation e=mc*2 mean
(speed of light)
What happens when the nuclei of small atoms join together?
They form heavier nuclei and release energy
What is fusion?
The process in which light nuclei combine at extremely high temperatures forming heavier nuclei and releasing energy.
