Development
A process of improvement in the conditions of people through diffusion (spread) of knowledge and technology.
Human Development Index (HDI)
Measurement developed by the United Nations to rank development levels of countries. The scale is from 0 to 1.0.

Gross National Income (GNI)
The value of the output of goods and services produced in a country in a year, INCLUDING money that leaves and enters the country

measures the extent of inequality in a country; the greater the difference between the HDI & the IHDI, the more inequality there is
Gender Inequality Index (GII)
measures the gender gap in achievement in a country; the higher the GII, the more inequality there is between men & women in that country
Fair trade
International trade that provides greater equity to workers, small businesses, and consumers
Sustainable Development Goals
Seventeen goals adopted by the U.N. in 2015 to reduce disparities (differences) between developed and developing countries by 2030.
Primary Sector
The portion of the economy concerned with the direct extraction (taking out) of materials from Earth's surface, generally through agriculture, although sometimes by mining, fishing, and forestry.
Secondary Sector
The portion of the economy concerned with manufacturing useful products through processing, transforming, and assembling raw materials.
Tertiary Sector
The portion of the economy concerned with providing goods and services to people in exchange for payment.

Quaternary Sector
The sector of the economy that includes high tech jobs and services such as computer programming, software development, and research.
Quinary Sector
The sector of the economy that includes high-level decision makers such as politicians and CEOs.
Animate power
Power supplied by people or animals (e.g. animal on wheel, pump well, etc.)
Biomass power
The capture of energy from the burning of organic matter and organic waste (e.g. burning wood)
Fossil fuel
Nonrenewable energy (e.g. oil, coal, etc.)
