Terms that will be used during the first week or two of school.

PLAY
observation
using your 5 senses to gather information about the environment
inference
using 1 or more observations to make a conclusion
density
the amount of matter in a given amount of space
mass
the amount of matter in an object
volume
the amount of space an object takes up
direct relationship
when an increase in one variable causes an increase in another variable (or both decrease)
indirect (aka inverse) relationship
when an increase in one variable causes a decrease in another variable (they do the opposite)
cyclic relationship
when a variable repeats itself in a predictable period of time
Geology
the study of Earth's interior and it's solid crust
Meteorology
the study of Earth's atmosphere and weather
Astronomy
the study of space, stars and planets
prediction
a type of inference that guesses at the outcome of a future event
weight
a measurement of gravity on an object; similar to mass but NOT the same
independent variable
this is the variable that CAUSES the change in the other variable; it's not the control, but the observer knows these values before starting the experiment
dependent variable
this is the variable being observed or studied; its changed by the independent variable.
