Unit 9: Oxidation and Reduction Set 1: Identifying, Dissecting and Composing ReDox Reactions
Terms in this set (12)
A representation of a chemical reaction that uses symbols to show the relationship between the reactants and the products
A chemical substance that is present at the start of a chemical reaction.
A chemical substance formed as a result of a chemical reaction
Oxidation Numbers (States)
the number assigned to an element that shows how many electrons it gains, loses, or shares.
Besides assisting with bonding, they are used to keep track of oxidation and reduction.
Law of Conservation of Charge
A law that states that in a chemical reaction, the total charge of the reactants equals the total charge of the products
A chemical change in which an element losses an electron(s) to another element (the OXIDIZING AGENT). As a result of the loss in electron(s), the oxidation number goes up.
A chemical change in which a element gains an electron(s) from another element (the REDUCING AGENT). As a result of the gain in electron(s), the oxidation number goes down.
The electron acceptor in a ReDox reaction. It caused an element to loss electron(s).
The electron donor in a ReDox reaction. It provides the element(s) for the other element to gain.
An equation showing just the oxidation or just the reduction that takes place in a redox reaction
A chemical reaction involving the transfer of one or more electrons from one reactant to another; also called oxidation-reduction reaction.
Ions that are present but do not participate in the reaction. Their Oxidation Number does not change as they transition from the Reactant to the Product side of a ReDox equation.
