Explain how a manor in the early Middle Ages was largely self-sufficient both militarily and economically.
Nearly all resources needed on a manor were made and distributed on the manor by the peasants who worked there. In addition to the resources, each manor had it's own set of knights who worked for their feudal lord there, and provided protection for the peasants and lord. The majority of food eaten by those on the manor, excluding certain foreign ingredients, were planted, farmed, prepared, and cooked on the manor grounds. The manor did not require outside resources, currency, or protection, therefore they were self-sufficient and unique, causing them to rarely inter traded with other manors.
Explain how the decline of trade during the early Middle Ages contributed to the self-sufficiency of the manor system.
As trade became more difficult in the Middle-ages, due to the destabilization after the collapse of the Roman empire, it declined. Instead, it was replaced by the accumulation of locals to become a self-sufficient system to provide for their needs. The group that got together followed the highest person in power as the lord, and the others were knights and peasants. This process gradually took place over a large period of time, and was a political and social system.
