Agonists
a molecule that, by binding to a receptor site, stimulates a response
Antagonists
Chemical substances that block or reduce a cell's response to the action of other chemicals or neurotransmitters.
Agonists vs. Antagonists
Agonists = causes stimulation of receptors
Antagonists = binds to receptors and block other meds
Typical antipsychotic drugs
~Block dopamine receptors, preventing the stimulation of the postsynaptic neurons by dopamine.
~They depress the RAS, limiting the stimuli coming into the brain.
~They also have anticholinergic, antihistamine, and alpha-adrenergic blocking effects, all related to the blocking of the dopamine receptor sites
Atypical antipsychotic drugs
~Block both dopamine and serotonin receptors.
~This dual action may help alleviate some of the unpleasant neurological effects and depression associated with the typical antipsychotics
cholonergic
relating to or denoting nerve cells in which acetylcholine acts as a neurotransmitter.
Anticholonergics
Reduce smooth muscle tone and secretions from respiratory tract. causes heart rate to increase. used in radiology to treat vaso-vagal reaction (low hr and bp).
