small structures in the cytoplasm that do special jobs
Prokaryote
a unicellular organism that doesn't have a nucleus or membrane bound organelles

an organism made up of cells that have a nucleus enclosed by a membrane, multiple chromosomes, and a mitotic cycle; include protists, animals, plants, and fungi but not archaea or bacteria
Plasma Membrane
thin outer boundary of a cell that regulates the traffic of chemicals between the cell and its surroundings
Cell Wall
a thin membrane around the cytoplasm of a cell that provides support and protection in some cells
Nucleus
a part of the cell containing DNA and RNA and responsible for growth and reproduction
Nucleolus
The organelle where ribosomes are made, synthesized and partially assembled, located in the nucleus
Rough ER
An organelle that assists with transport in the cell and has ribosomes on it's exterior
Ribosome
small particle in the cell on which proteins are assembled; made of RNA and protein
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of the cell, organelle that is the site of ATP (energy) production
Chloroplast
organelle found in cells of plants and some other organisms that captures the energy from sunlight and converts it into chemical energy
Vesicle
a small anatomically normal sac or bladderlike structure (especially one containing fluid)
DNA
deoxyribonucleic acid, the material that contains the information that determines inherited characteristics
Flagella
whiplike tails found in one-celled organisms to aid in movement
Golgi Apparatus
A system of membranes that modifies and packages proteins for export by the cell
Vacuole
storage structures for food, water, minerals, waste
Lysosome
cell organelle filled with enzymes needed to break down certain materials in the cell
