The Central Powers were made up of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey (Ottoman Empire), and Bulgaria.
How did nationalism help bring about the war in 1914?
Serbia wanted to gain control of land its people believed should have been part of its territory, and this led to the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand.
What caused Germany to invade Belgium?
Belgium refused to let Germany march through its territory to attack France.
What sequence of events led the United States into World War I?
The Lusitania was sunk in 1915. IN January 1917, it was discovered that Germany had been seeking support from Mexico in return for helping Mexico regain land it had lost to the United Stated. In February 1917, Germans again began submarine warfare on American shipping.
Why did the United States enter World War I?
German forces killed American civilians by sinking ships, and Germany sought Mexican support in exchange for lands lost to the US.
How did new technologies affect the fighting in World War I?
Airplanes were used to drop bombs or fire at enemy troops. Poison gas was used to kill or injure the enemy. Tanks were used in battle. Submarines could destroy enemy ships.
How did women contribute to the war effort?
They took over important jobs left vacant by men who went to war.
What caused the government to set up the Food Administration?
The need for food supplies to be conserved and used wisely so that soldiers and Allied civilians would have enough to eat.
Why was World War I known as "The War to End all Wars?
Because people hoped that such a terrible conflict would never happen again.
Why did President Wilson want a League of Nations?
He wanted to prevent future wars.
