Theory
- Set of interrelated concepts that provides a systematic view of a phenomenon
- allows relationships to be proposed & predictions made
- can suggest potential actions
Grand Nursing Theories
- nursing conceptual models
- include the theories/models that were developed to describe the discipline of nursing as a whole
Ex) Florence Nightingale, Virginia Henderson, Martha Rogers, Dorthea Orem, & Betty Neuman
Middle Range Nursing Theories
- contain a limited number of concepts
- focused on a limited aspect of reality
- more easily tested through research
- more readily used as frameworks for research studies
Ex) Pender's Health Promotion Model, Theory of Uncertainty in Illness, Theory of Holistic Comfort
How is Theory used in research?
- used as a research framework & the context for a study (qualitative or quantitative designs)
- generated as the outcome of a research study (qualitative design)
- research is undertaken to test a theory (quantitative design)
Theory-Generating Nursing Research
- create/generate theory
- examine a phenomenon within a particular context
- identify and describe its major elements or events
- focuses on "what" & "how"
- does NOT usually attempt to explain "why"
- INDUCTIVE
Inductive
- uses a process in which generalizations are developed from specific observations
- used in Theory-Generating Nursing Research
Theory-Testing Nursing Research
- use research to test a theory
- DEDUCTIVE
Deductive
- hypotheses are derived from theory & tested, employing experimental research methods
Steps of theory-testing nursing research
-chooses a theory of interest and selects a propositional statement to be examined
-develops hypotheses (that have measurable variables)
-conducts study
-interprets the findings (considering predictive ability of the theory)
-determines implications for further use of the theory in nursing practice or whether further research could be beneficial
Application to Research and EBP
- provides parameters for the research
- ID intent
Application of Theory in Qualitative Research
- Grounded theory
- Finding grouped into themes
- Framework or theory usually found at end of manuscript in "discussion" section
Grounded theory
- qualitative methods
- application of theory in qualitative research
Theory as Research Framework
- Framework identified at the beginning when the researcher uses quantitative methods
