Scientific Method
System used to solve problems and answer questions.
Each Step isn't always used or in same order.
Observation
Made by gathering information using your senses about events or processes.
Quantitative Observation
Specific observations by counting or measuring. Always including a number!
Qualitative Observation
Specific observations noticing color, texture, order, sweetness, etc. They deal with the 5 senses.
Inference
A guess based on prior knowledge or experience
Hypothesis
A proposed scientific explanation for a set of observations
Independent (Manipulated) Variable
The variable that is deliberately changed during an experiment
Dependent (Responding) Variable
The variable that changes in response to the independent (manipulated) variable changing
Control Group
Group not exposed to independent variable in an experiment. Group results are used to compare to experimental data.
Experimental Group
Group exposed to the independent variable in an experiment
Bias
Unfair prejudice towards a particular opinion; favoring one side of an argument
Ethics
A set of principles that guide decision-making; whether something is morally right or wrong (e.g. it is ethical to warn people of the side effects of a drug...it is unethical to secretly test new drugs on someone)
