The ICF model provides a language and framework for describing functioning and health. The framework helps to describe the extent of the influence health has on functioning. This provides the Speech-Language Pathologist with an understanding of the role they can play in the prevention, assessment and treatment of communication disorders. Contextual and health condition factors work together to increase or reduce barriers. The SLP can help to reduce impairment and reduce activity and participation limitations through collaborative treatment and counseling. Environment barriers can include both physical barriers (e.g., being able to move physically to the place of communication) and societal barriers (i.e., expectations of needed skills to perform a communicative role in society). Both types of roles needed to be evaluated for the role they play in acting as barriers. Personal barriers, especially how the client reacts to situations surrounding the disorder (e.g., reductions in activity) will lead to facilitation or barriers.
