Terms in this set (11)
study of knowledge (belief, opinion, justification)
Defined Knowledge as perception
-claimed he could teach you how to be a virtuous person
Protagoras' Measure Doctrine
"man is the measure (judge) of all things"
-man is ambiguous, humanS or individual?
Socrates interpretation of Measure Doctrine
whatever appears to be the case to someone, is the case to someone
Protagorean Relativism (subjectivism)
all beliefs/opinions/perceptions are equally true or correct
-cant be wrong if it is your preference (all opinions = true)
Counter example to Knowledge = perception
-these are both false perceptions so this does not count as knowledge
this makes protagorean relativism false, along with the measure doctrine and knowledge=perception
1. Assume: all beliefs, opinions, pereptions are equally true and correct
2. I believe that statement 1 is true
3. so my belief is true
4. so statement 1 is true
5. but you believe 1 is false
6. so your beleif is true
7. so 1 is false
8. statement 1 is true and false
10. so it is not the case that all beliefs/opinions/perceptions are equally true
If you claim all trues are relative
what is the absolute truth?
there would be no experts if this were true
Then what is knowledge? Knowledge = belief
for this to work we need:
-justification for belief
this view of knowledge is the tripartite account
Justified, true, belief
