Artists were able to travel up and down the Grand Canal, painting the landscapes and scenery along the way.

China entered a decline during the 1700's. England was industrializing at this time and needed new markets. England forced China to buy opium which led to the Opium War. After winning the war, England forced China to enter into unequal treaties.

Leading up to the Boxer Uprising, there was tremendous anti-foreign feeling in China. The Chinese believe that westerners were polluting the land with un-Chinese ways.
How did the Box Uprising help to shape Chinese political thought?
After the Boxer Uprising failed, Chinese nationalism spread along with the desire to free China from foreign domination.
