A pattern of organization is a particular arrangement of ideas and information. Such a pattern may be used to organize an entire composition or a single paragraph within a longer work.

Order of Importance

The information is expressed as a hierarchy or in priority.

Cause and Effect

A cause is an event or action that directly results in another event or action. An effect is the direct or logical outcome of an event or action. The concept of cause and effect provides a way of organizing a piece of writing. It helps a writer show the relationships between events or ideas.

Proposition and Support Order

Proposition and support order is often used to organize persuasive writing. A writer's position on an issue or problem is called a proposition or claim. Any reasons or evidence a writer uses to prove the proposition is called support. Facts, statistics, examples, and quotations are common types of support.

Order of Degree

Order of degree is the arrangement of information by the degree that it shows a particular quality or trait. To identify order-of-degree organization look for clue words such as more, less, most, least, fastest, slower, etc. Order-of-degree organization can follow increasing or decreasing order.
