Terms in this set (27)
gap
a break or opening
range
the difference between the maximum and minimum values in a distribution
mode
the number that occurs most often in a set of data-there can be one, more than one, or no mode for a set of data
frequency tables
a data listing which also lists the frequencies of the data
statistics
numerical data relating to a group of individuals; statistics is also the name for the science of collecting, analyzing and interpreting such data
random sample
a sample set up so that each member of the target population has an equally likely chance of occurring
representative sample
a sample in which every member of the population has an equal chance of being included in the sample. Random sampling is the best way to produce a representative sample
measures of center
gives a numerical value to represent the center of the data (ie. midpoint of an ordered list or the balancing point) median or mean
measures of spread
range, interquartile range, and mean absolute deviation (MAD)
mode
the number that occurs most often in a set of data-there can be one, more than one, or no mode for set of data
numerical (quantitative) data
data categories described by numbers
outliers
values significantly higher or lower than the other data values in a data set.
peak
being at the point of maximum frequency, intensity, use, etc.
mean absolute deviation (MAD)
a numerical measeure of spread that shows how much data values vary from
median
the number or number(s) in a line or bar graph that is in the middle
distribution
the arrangement of the values of a data set
five number summary
the five numbers used to create the box plot- lower extreme/Q1/median/Q3/upper quartile
frequency table
a way to organize data in a table showing the frequency with which each category occurs
data
the numbers produced in response to a statistical question
cluster
a group of things or persons close together
categorical data
data that has been grouped into categories, usually not numbers
box plot
shows the distribution of data compared to a number
bar graph
Is used to compare data for categories and has single categories (may be numerical or categorical)
interquartile range
the difference between Q3 minus Q1 marks in a boxplot - where the middle 50% of the data can be found
mean
a measure of center used to describe "typical in a set of data-it is most accurate when the range of the data is relatively small-the mean is found by finding the sum of the data and dividing it by the number of data pieces
histogram
is used to compare data for categories but has intervals or ranges given for the categories
variability
an indication of how widely spread or closely clustered the data values are. Range, minimum, and maximum values, and clusters in the distribution give some indication of variability
