Formation and Properties of Ionic Bonds
Terms in this set (16)
Electrostatic force that holds oppositely charged particles together.
Ionic Bonds generally occur between
Metals and Nonmetals [when the Electronegativity difference greater than 1.70]
Overall Charge of an Ionic Bond
Ionic Bons form
A Crystal Lattice
3D geometric arrangement of the ions.
Structure of a Crystal Lattice
Positive ions surround negative ions and negative ions surround positive ions.
Ionic Compounds don't readily evaporate into a vapor or gas.
High boiling and melting points
Generally melt between 600 degrees Celsius and 20000 degrees Celsius. [These high temperatures are needed in order to gain enough energy to break the ionic bonds]
-Ionic solids do no conduct electricity because the ions are fixed in position.
-Ionic solids in the molten state do conduct electricity since the ions are free flowing.
-Ionic solids disassociate in water and the ions are free flowing and therefore conduct electricity.
Most Ionic Compounds are Soluble in Water (Polar)
Polar solute will dissolve in a polar solvent and vice versa.
Most Ionic compounds are hard, rigid, and brittle
Positive and negative ions are strongly attached to each other and difficult to separate. But, when pressure is applied to an ionic crystal then ions of like charge may be forced together. The electrostatic repulsion can be enough to split the crystal, thus the compounds are brittle.
Ionic Compounds are formed from what kind of Reaction
Ionic Compounds contain
Energy required to separate 1 mole of ions
The more negative the lattice energy,
the stronger the bond.
Smaller Ions have
more negative lattice energy values since the valence electrons are closer to the nucleus and have more attraction.
