barge rafter
A gable end roof member that extends beyond the gable to support a decorative end piece.
bottom chord
The lower member of a truss.
dormer
Framework extending from the roof surface that provides additional light and ventilation to an attic space.
false fascia
The board that is attached to the tails of the rafters to straighten and space the rafters and provide a nailing surface.
gable
The triangular wall enclosed by the sloping ends of a ridged roof.
hip roof
A roof with four sides or slopes extending toward the center.
lookout
A structural member used to frame an overhang.
open web steel joist
Used to support roof loads.
purlin
A horizontal roof support member parallel to the plate and installed between the plate and the ridgeboard.
ribband
A 1 x 4 nailed to the ceiling joists at the center of the span to prevent twisting and bowing of the joists.
ridgeboard
Horizontal board (typically a 2x member) placed at the ridge of the roof. Upper ends of the rafters are fastened to it.
spreader bar
A rigging device used when lifting large members with a crane.
stick-built framing
Method in which framing members are installed one at a time (rather than as a prefabricated assembly).
strongback
An L-shaped arrangement of lumber used to support ceiling joists and keep them in alignment.
tag line
Cord or rope attached to a structural member or other large unit that is being positioned by a crane, to assist in guiding the member into proper position.
tiedown
Metal anchoring device used to fasten framing members to one another.
unit rise
The amount (in inches) that a common rafter will rise per foot of run.
