Address Bar
Displays your current location in the folder structure as a series of links separated by arrows
Address Bar
The bar at the top of the folder window with which you can navigate to a different folder or library, or go back to a previous one
Application
A set of instructions that a computer uses to accomplish a task; also called a program
Back tip

The program within Windows 8 that displays the contents of libraries, folders, and files on your computer, and which also enables you to perform task related to your files and folders such as copying, moving, and renaming. It is at work anytime you are viewing the contents of a library, a folder, or a file

Folder Window
Displays the contents of the current folder, library, or device, and contains helpful parts so that you can navigate-explore within the organizing structure of Windows
File Properties
Information about a file such as its author, the date the file was last changed, and any descriptive tags
Keyboard Shortcut
A combination of two or more keyboard keys, used to perform a task that would otherwise require a mouse
Library
A collection of items, such as files and folders, assembled from various locations
Operating System
A specific type of computer program that manages the other programs on a computer- including computer devices such as desktop computers, laptop computers, smartphones, tablet computers, and game consoles
Progress Bar
In a dialog box or taskbar button, a bar that indicates visually the progress of a task such as a download or file transfer
Recycle Bin
A folder that stores anything that you delete from your computer, and from which anything stored can be retrieved until the contents are permanently deleted by activating the Empty Recycle Bin command
Sleep
Turning off your computer in a manner that automatically saves your work, stops the fan, and uses a small amount of electrical power to maintain your work in memory
Snap (desktop apps)
A Windows 8 desktop feature that automatically resizes windows when you move them to the edge of the screen
Start Screen
The first screen that displays after signing in to a Windows 8 device, which displays square and rectangular boxes-referred to as tiles- from which one can access apps, websites, programs, and tools for using the computer by clicking or tapping them

An operating system developed by Microsoft Corporation designed to work with mobile computing devices of all types and also with traditional PCs
Backstage View
A centralized space for file management tasks; for example, opening, saving, printing, publishing, or sharing a file. A navigation pane displays along the left side with tabs that group file-related tasks together
Clipboard
A temporary storage area that holds text or graphics that you select and then cut or copy
Collaborate
To work with others as a team in an intellectual endeavor to complete a shared task or to achieve a shared goal
Common Dialog Boxes
The set of dialog boxes that includes Open, Save, and Save As, which are provided by the Windows programming interface, and which display and operate in all of the Office programs in the same manner
Desktop app
The term that commonly refers to a computer program that is installed on your computer and requires a computer operating system like Microsoft Windows or Apple OS to run
Document Properties
Details about a file that describe or identify it, including the title, author name, subject, and keywords that identify the document's topic or contents; also known as metadata

A blinking vertical line that indicates where text or graphics will be inserted

A page orientation in which the paper is wider than it is tall

Notification Bar
An area at the bottom of an Internet Explorer window that displays information about pending downloads, security issues, add-ons, and other issues related to the operation of your computer
Open Dialog Box
A dialog box from which you can navigate to, and then open on your screen, an existing file that was created in that same program

A separate area of a window
Print Preview
A view of a document as it will appear when you print it
Quick Access Toolbar
In an Office program window, the small row of buttons in the upper left corner of the screen from which you can perform frequently used commands
Read-Only
A property assigned to a file that prevents the file from being modified or deleted; it indicates that you cannot save any changes to the displayed document unless you first save it with a new name
Ribbon
A user interface in both Office 2013 and File Explorer that groups the commands for performing related tasks on tabs across the upper portion of the program window
Taskbar
The area along the lower edge of the desktop that displays buttons representing programs
Toggle Button
A button that can be turned on by clicking it once, and then turned off by clicking it again
Toolbar
I a folder window, arrow of buttons with which you can perform common tasks, such as changing the view of your files and folders or burning files to a CD
Window
A rectangular area on a computer screen in which programs and content appear, and which can be moved, resized, minimized, or closed
Zoom
The action of increasing or decreasing the size of the viewing area on the screen
Format Painter
Used to copy the formatting of specific text or of a paragraph and then apply it in other locations in your document
