When The Ghost appeared, Marcellus beseeches Horatio to question it. He respondes with the quote, "What art thou that uspurs'st this time of night," (Shakespeare). Horatio, the scholar of the group, is the only one to speak directly to The Ghost. The scholar ends up yelling after a character that has already exited the stage. 2. Fear surrounds Horatio, Marcellus, and Barnardo as The Ghost roams about the courtyard. Horatio has refused to admit The Ghost exists, so the two guards, Marcellus and Bernardo, have forced him to come and speak to The Ghost. What is happening when this quote is said? 3. What does this quote reveal about what is happening in the play, the attitude or frame of mind of the speaker, or what will happen later in the play?Gertrude, Hamlet's mother, eventually got tired at watching her son sulk about the house. To Hamlet, she says, "cast thy nighted color off," (Shakespeare). Gertrude explains that death is a natural part of life. The Queen only says something to Hamlet after he blatently insults her new husband: "a little more tha kin and less than kind," (Shakespeare). Gertrude's advice is an allusion to the depression and grief Hamlet has begin to struggle with, and, additionally, the possibility that he may still be wearing black the "nighted color" even after his father's funeral.Quote: "Of Hamlet, and the trifling of his favor, hold it a fashion and a toy in blood, a violet in the youth of primy nature, forward, not permanent, sweet, not lasting, the perfume and suppliance of a minute, no more." 1. Laertes is about to leave for school, and hoping to leave his younger sister with a few words of wisdom before he goes. Laertes is worried about Ophelia's relationship with the prince, cautioning that his words and actions are temporary, and that she must recognize that her relationship is impermanent. Laertes has little faith in Hamlet, stating that it is Ophelia's job to maintain her chastity and ignore the prince's advances.Quote: "Murder most foul, as in the best it is, but this most foul, strange, and unnatural..." 1. What does this quote reveal about what is happening in the play, the attitude or frame of mind of the speaker, or what will happen later in the play?In Hamlet's first act, scene five, The Ghost speaks to Hamlet, stating that it's the spirit of his dead father. Hamlet is astounded, hanging onto The Ghost's every word until he reveals that it was murder to tear him from his kingdom: "Murder most foul, as in the best it is, but this most foul strange, and unnatural," (Shakespeare). Hamlet, immediately, vows to avenge his father's. The Ghost confounds Hamlet, saying Claudius, the prince's uncle and step-father, killed the kingdom's patriarch. The rage of the old king seethes throughout the scene, and Hamlet's anger seems to rise with it.Quote: "My dread Lord, your leave and favor to return to France, from whence though willingly I came to Denmark...." 1. Who said the quote and who is being spoken to? 2. What is happening when this quote is said? 3. What does this quote reveal about what is happening in the play, the attitude or frame of mind of the speaker, or what will happen later in the play?In Act One's second scene, young Laertes bemoans his presence in Denmark. As Claudius is bidding farewell to his friends, the boy asks Claudius if he should be allowed to return to France. Laertes admits that the only reason he came to Denmark was to watch his friend's coronation: "From whence though willingly I came to Demark/To show my duty in your coronation," (Shakespeare). Claudius immediately turns to the boy's father, asking his thoughts, to which Polonius replies: "I do beseech you, give him leave to go," (Shakespeare). After Laertus is granted leave, Hamlet blatantly insults Claudius in front of the courtroom, leading to Queen Gertrude's famous "nighted color" quote.Which of the following sources found in a library is cited correctly?Clark, Hugh R.
