anatomy of neck

specifically designed for swedish massage students
bones of neck
7 cervical vertebrae, C1 is the atlas, C2 is the axis which has a projection on it for C1 to rotate on, the vertebrae have holes in their transverse processes for the vertebral artery to pass through, C7 articulates with T1
movements of the neck
flexion, extension, rotation and side-bending
muscles involved in movements
flexion = sterno-cledio-mastoid and scalenes, extension = upper part of erector spinae, upper fibres of trapezius , splenius capitis, semispinalis capitis and lonissimus capitis
stern-cleido-mastoid origin, insertion and actions
origin = sternum and clavicle, insertion = temporal bone and occipital bone, action = if both sides contract together then flexion of neck, if one side contracts then neck flexes laterally and rotates to opposite side
scalenes origin, insertion and actions
origin = cervical vertebrae, insertion = 1st and 2nd ribs, action = flexion and rotation of neck
