Sertraline (Zoloft) MOA
Selectively inhibits the reuptake of serotonin so more is available.
Sertraline (Zoloft) uses
depression and anxiety
Sertraline (Zoloft) AE
AE: agitation, insomnia or somnolence, headache, fatigue, dizziness, CNS AE.
BBW: suicidal thinking esp. in children adolescents.
Sertraline (Zoloft) nursing considerations
Abrupt discontinuation can result in withdrawal symptoms: nausea, sweating, agitation, tremor, insomnia, seizures. Avoid taking with St. John's Wort. Can predispose you to serotonin syndrome.
Sertraline (Zoloft) pt education
Avoid taking with MAOIs. May cause Serotonin Syndrome (autonomic hyperactivity, hyperthermia, rigidity, diaphoresis, hypertension, hyper-reflexibility)
Combination with MAOIs can also cause neuroleptic malignant syndrome: (hyperthermia, confusion, rigidity [lead-pipe], variable B/P, sweating, tachycardia)
Concerta (Ritalin) classes

Concerta (Ritalin) MOA
A CNS stimulant that works in the reticular activating system (RAS) to cause heightened alertness/attention and ability to focus. Helps you to filter out unnecessary information so that the important stuff gets through.

In a non-ADHD patient causes nervousness and insomnia. All patients at risk for dysrhythmias, hypertension, and liver toxicity.
