Alliteration
a literary technique where the same consonant sounds are repeated throughout a sentence.
Character
a person fron the poem
Couplet
two lines in a row that rhyme in a poem. They may form a stanza on their own or may be part of a stanza.
Flashback
this is used when an event is described that takes place before the time in the poem.
Free Verse
a form of poetry where there is no set pattern. There is no set rhythm and rhyme.
Hyperbole
refers to the use of exaggeration to describe something.
Imagery
the use of details to help the reader imagine something
Line Break
when a line ends and a new one starts.
Lyric Poem
a type of short poem. Lyric poems describe what the speaker thinks or how the speaker feels.
Metaphor
compares two things, but without using the words "like" or "as".
Mood
this is how the poem makes the reader feel, or the feelings that the poem creates in the reader.
Narrator
the person telling the story in a poem.
Onomatopoeia
a term that describes a word that sounds like the object or thing that it names. Creative sound.
Personification
when an object is described as if it were human.
Point of View
this refers to the position of the speaker. The point of view can be first person, second person, third person limited, or third person omniscient.
Repetition
when words, lines, or stanzas are repeated.
Rhyme
when two words have the same ending sound.
Rhyme Scheme
this refers to the lines in the poem that rhyme. The rhyme scheme is represented by letters. e.g.(aa,bb) or (ab, ab)
Rhythm
pattern of sounds in a poem.
Simile
compares two things using "like" or "as"
Speaker
the person, character, or object that is the voice of the poem.
Stanza
these are sections that the poem is divided up into. They are also known as verses.
Theme
the main topic or main idea of a poem.
Tone
how the author of the poem feels about a subject.
