What species does Ancylostoma caninum occur in?
dogs, foxes, coyotes
What specie does Ancylostoma tubaeforme occur in?
cats
What species does Ancylostoma braziliense occur in?
dog, fox, cat
T or F: All species of Ancylostoma are zoonotic.
True
Describe the Ancylostoma species life cycle
- Unembryonated eggs are shed in the feces
- Eggs develop L1 larve which hatch & develop into L3 larvae in the environment
- Larval leak to intestines in male and female dogs (older dogs typically)
What routes does infection occur in Ancylostoma species?
- Ingestion
- Skin penetration
- Transmammary (A. caninum only)
Describe Ancylostoma eggs
- 55-65 X 35-45 um
- Ellipsoidal
- Smooth, thin shell
- Colorless
- 4-8 cell stage when passed in fresh feces
What species does Uncinaria stenocephala occur in?
foxes, cats, dogs
Describe the cycle of Uncinaria stenocephala.
- Oral ingestion of infective L3 larvae
- Direct development in intestine
- Eggs look just like Ancylostoma spp. eggs, but are large (71-93 X 37-55 um)
What species does Bunostomu species occur in?
Hookworm of ruminants (mostly cattle)
Describe the cycle of Bunostomum species
- Infect animals by skin penetration or ingestion of infective largae
- Eggs are very similar in appearance to other hookworm eggs except the cells are dark and granular with an irregular, roughened surface
- Skn penetration most common route of infection
What is the clinical disease of hookworms?
Ranges from asymptomatic to fatal due to severe blood loss; Ancylostoma is a voracious blood feeder compared to Uncinaria
- Black, tarry feces called melena
Severity of infection from hookworm depends on....
age, nutrition, exposure to infective larvae (contaminated environment), immunity, other infections
- Partial immunity occurs ind ogs as the animal gets older; however, some have chronic infections due to larval leak
T or F: Hookworms is not a zoonotic disease.
False.
Eosinophilic enteritis in humans
Describe the Cutaneous Larva Migrans with hookworms.
- Creeping eruptions, plumber's itch, etc.
- Larvae penetrating and migrating through the skin
- Severity depends on sensitivity due to previous infection
- Also seen in animals if infected via skin penetration route
What is the treatment and control for hookworms?
Tx: Follow same guidelines as for roundworms; if infection is severe, stabilize puppy/kitten first; treat bitch to reduce transmammary
Control: sanitation; sunlight, freezing, desiccation
What species are the hosts for Strongyloides stercoralis?
dog, cat, man, fox
What specie is the host for Strongyloides ransomi?
swine
What specie is the host for Strongyloides papillosus?
ruminants
What specie is the host for Strongyloides westeri?
horses
T or F: Strongyloides stercoralis is zoonotic.
True
What species are the hosts for Strongyloides stercoralis?
dog, cat, man, fox
What species does Bunostomu species occur in?
Hookworm of ruminants (mostly cattle)
