Hair Loss (Alopecia) :
a 60% hair loss in a single area is necessary before hair loss can be detected
Examination should begin with the scalp to determine whether inflammation, scale, or infiltrative changes are present
3 diseases account for most cases: alopecia areata, tinea capitis, and hair pulling
Alopecia Areata:
complete hair loss in a localized area; an immunologic pathogenic mechanism is suspected because dense infiltration of lymphocytes precedes hair loss
Ophiasis:
a rare and unusual form of alopecia areata that begins at the occiput and proceeds along the hair margins to the front scalp; often eventuates in total scalp hair loss
Alopecia Areata: Treatment:
superpotent topical steroids, minoxidil (Rogaine), contact therapy and anthralin are topical treatment options.
Corticosteroids can be given to decrease inflammation but should not be used long term
Hair Pulling;
traumatic hair pulling causes the hair shafts to be broken off at different lengths with an ill-defined area of hair loss, petechia around follicular openings and wrinkled hair shaft on examination
Behavior could be habit or an acute stress reaction
Treatment: Psych Eval
