The existential nature of humans to transcend their immediate situation and their self-interest to strive toward something above themselves. Use of creativity and imagination. Transcendence is the only way to become your true self.
The goal of existential therapy. The values and goals must be their own. Individual has genuine awareness of herself and copes with existential questions/crises by experiencing them directly and acting on them.
Stage 1 of Existential Awareness
Innocence and openness to experience (infants).
Stage 2 of Existential Awareness
Reacting to values of the world around them, specifically parents (toddlers).
Stage 3 of Existential Awareness
The consciousness of oneself as an individual (children, adolescents).
Stage 4 of Existential Awareness
Transcendent consciousness. Individuals standing outside themselves, being aware of the world and how they relate to it (adulthood).
A mode of existence. Openings to understanding the dreamer's being. Importance is placed on the patient's experience rather than the therapist's interpretation.
A special form of I-thou between the client and the therapist. Therapist forms a genuine caring for the client.
Occurs when the client does not take responsibility, is alienated, not aware of feelings or is inauthentic in dealing with life.
An opportunity for change, to step away from the problem and confront oneself.
Achieved through three processes: wishing, willing and deciding.
