Phases & Classification of sling loads Pg. 112, 115-116
Terms in this set (20)
What are the phases of an external load operation?
I: Preparation & Rigging
II: Inspection
III: Sling Load Operation
What occurs during the Preparation & Rigging phase of an external load operation?
- Loads are prepared and rigged IAW the proper manuals. i.e.
( 75% fuel or less. Glass & Plastic are "shatter-proofed." Correct link count for "nose down attitude." Breakaways & ties are placed. )
Who is qualified to perform an inspection?
- A pathfinder school graduate, SLICC graduate or an AASLT graduate with an E4 rank or above.
What must occur during an inspection?
- Loads are inspected a minimum of two times.
- Inspection is recorded on a DA FORM 7382 IAW TM 4-48.09 & copied 3x.
(indvds who rigged the load can't inspect it).
What are the expectations for the two inspections?
- 1st: Find Deficiency
- 2nd: Verify Deficiency
Who receives a copy of the DA FORM 7382?
1st: The Aviation Unit.
2nd: Taped to the load.
3rd: To the Supported Unit.
What occurs during the phase III Sling Load Operation?
Ground crews hook up loads & ensure that Phase I & II were performed correct.
What are the factors of In-Flight Stability?
Proper weight
Proper drag surface
Proper air speed
What is "proper weight" for In-Flight Stability?
The minimum weight of a slingload must be 500 lb. The maximum weight can't exceed the aircraft lift or cargo hook tensile strength.
What is "proper drag surface" for In-Flight Stability?
"Nose down attitude." Achieved through proper link count to make the load as aerodynamic as possible.
What is "proper air speed" for In-Flight Stability?
Determined by aviation unit commander, OR in their absence, the pilot.
How do you improve In-Flight Stability?
- Increase weight of load.
- Redistribute weight. (load plan)
- Alter drag surface. (link count: "raise/lower the front & back of load.")
- Install drogue chute. (small stability parachute)
- Reduce airspeed. (least preferred)
What is a certified slingload?
Items of equipment and their associated rigging procedures which have completed the evaluation and testing required for sling load certification.
What is the regulation for rigging procedures?
TM 4-48.09
TM 4-48.10/11
What are the restrictions that apply to certified sling loads?
- Must be within the lifting capability of helicopter & not exceed the rated capacity of the sling set.
- Rigged in accordance of certified rigging procedure.
- Recommended stable airspeed for load is a recommendation.
Coordinate w/ who for loads at weights close to the aircraft hook limitations?
Aviation Unit
What is a Suitable Sling Load?
Items of equipment and their associated rigging procedures that have not been certified but demonstrated acceptable lift & flight characteristics during a flight test.
- Little to no problems.
- Can fly, but hasn't been certified.
What is a Unique Sling Load?
Equipment carried on a one-time or low frequency basis. (i.e. telephone pole).
- Requires O6 signature to be flown.
- Equipment not listed in TM 4-48.09, 4-48.10/11.
What is a Prohibited Sling Load?
Items of equipment that are prohibited & will never fly.
Acronym for the types of sling loads?
C: certified
U: unique
P: prohibited
S: suitable
