Shen, general manifestation of the vital activities of the human body, and the outward sign of the relative strength of qi & blood of the zang fu organs
- broad sense (total external manifestation, reflections of zang fu organ functions
- narrow sense ( mental activities, incl. consciousness & cognition)
Origin of Spirit
combined mother's & father's essence = congenital essence
congenital essence + acquired essence = Spirit

Definition of Essence
original substance (source) of human life. Composed of:
-congenital essence, inherited form parents
-acquired essence, produced from food by stomach & spleen
Definition of Qi in respect to the 3 treasures
Qi denotes
-essential substances of the human body which maintain its vital activities
- functional activities of the zang fu organs & other tissues
Definition of Shen, (Spirit/Vitality) in respect to the 3 treasures
Spirit is the manifestation of all life activities
-broad sense, reflection of the functions of the viscera
-narrow sense, mental activities, consciousness & cognitive activities
To observe Spirit attention should be put on patient's facial expression, mental state, physical activity, speech, etc.
