the numerical factor of a term that contains a variable
Complementary Angles
two angles are complementary if the sum of their measures is 90 degrees
Constant
a term without a variable
constant rate of change
the rate of change between any two points in a linear relationship is the SAME or constant
Continuous data
Data that can take on ANY value. There is NO space between data values for a given domain. Graphs are represented with a solid line.
coordinate plane
a coordinate system in which a horizontal number line and a vertical number line intersect at their zero points
corresponding angles
angles that are in the same position on two parallel lines in relation to the transversal
dilation
a transformation that enlarges or reduces a figure by a scale factor
discrete data
data with space between possible data values. Graphs are represented by dots
distance formula
the distance between two points

to multiply a sum by a number, multiply each addend by the number outside the parentheses
domain
the set of x-coordinates in a relation
equation
a mathematical sentence stating that two quantities are equal
equiangular
a polygon in which all angles are congruent
exponent
In a power, the number of times the base is used as a factor.
exterior angles
the four outer angles formed by two lines cut by a transversal
hypotenuse
the side opposite the right angle in a right triangle
image
the resulting figure after a transformation
inequality
a mathematical sentence that contains < , >, etc.
interior angles
the inside angles formed by two lines cut by a transversal
irrational number
a number that cannot be expressed as quotient
legs
the two sides of a right triangle that form the right angle

terms that contain the same variables to the same powers
linear equation
an equation with a graph that is a straight line
linear function
a function in which the graph of the solutions forms a straight line
line of reflection
the line over which a figure is reflected
mean
the sum o the data divided by the number of items in the set
median
a measure of center in a set of numerical data
mode
the numbers or items that appear most often in a set of data
nonlinear function
a function whose rate of change is not constant. The graph is not a straight line.
obtuse angle
an angle whose measure is between 90 degrees and 180 degrees
ordered pair
a pair of numbers used to locate a point in the coordinate plane
origin
the point of intersection of the x-axis and the y-axis in a coordinate plane
parallel
lines that never intersect
perfect square
a rational number whose square root is a whole number.
perpendicular lines
two lines that intersect to form right angles
point-slope form
power
a product of repeated factors using an exponent and a base
Pythagorean Theorem
In a right triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the legs.
quadrants
the four sections of a coordinate plane
quadratic function
a function in which the greatest power of the variable is 2
quantitative graph
data that can not be given a numerical value
radical sign
the symbol used to indicate a positive square root.
range
the set of y coordinates in a relation
range
the difference between the greatest number (maximum) and the least number (minimum) in a set of data
remote interior angles
the angles of a triangle that are not adjacent to the given exterior angle
right angle
an angle whose measure is exactly 90 degrees

scale factor
the ratio of the lengths of two corresponding sides of two similar polygons
scientific notation
a compact way of writing numbers with absolute values that are very large or very small.
slope
the rate of change between any two points on a line. The ratio of the rise, or vertical change, to the run, or horizontal change.
supplementary angles
two angles are supplementary if the sum of their measures is 180 degrees
term
a number, a variable, or a product of numbers and variables
transformation
an operation that maps a geometric figure, preimage, onto a new figure, image.
translation
a transformation that slides a figure from one position to another without turning it
transversal
a line that intersects two or more other lines
variable
a symbol, usually a letter, used to represent a number, in mathematical responses or sentences.
