Backdrop Setting

A setting that is relatively unimportant to the plot.

When the story begins in the middle of things.

How things are as the story begins.

A transition in a story to an earlier time that interrupts the normal chronological order of events (for stories with one narrative).

A narrative that frames or surrounds another story or set of stories; this is considered a story within a story (for stories with two or more narratives).

Integral Setting

A setting that is essential to the plot; it influences action, character, or theme.

Linear Narrative

The linear (i.e. in a line) telling of a story as a sequence of events as they happen in time.

The overall feeling or emotional atmosphere of a story.

Nonlinear Narrative

The nonlinear (i.e. not in line) telling of a story as a series of separate events told out of chronological order.

The building of conflicts and crises within a story that lead toward climax (the turning point/point of greatest interest in a story).
