the human desire for happiness is "of divine origin," meaning it comes from God. God has placed it in our human hearts. Since God is the source of this desire, only God can truly fulfill it.
Where does the human desire for happiness come from?
The beatitudes tell us that happiness does not lie in money, possessions, prestige, or power. We receive happiness from showing mercy,, hungering for righteousness, and making peace.
What do the Beatitudes tell us about happiness?
Baptism reveals that we are able to become children of God. We receive sanctifying grace, and come to share in the life of the Blessed Trinity.
What are the effects of the Sacrament of Baptism?
It transforms both our relationship w God and w other believers. It is

What is sanctifying grace?
When we are baptized we are baptized into Christ's death. So, when we die we may also share in his resurrection. Those baptized into Christ's own body will be raised to immortality and live forever w God.

prayer-strengthens our resolve to fast and our generosity in alms.
fasting- turns our hearts toward God and cultivates compassion in us for those who will benefit in almsgiving.
almsgiving- ensures that our prayer and fasting give rise to a concrete response to the needs of the poor.

parables are stories that use metaphors based in daily life to convey religious truths.
What is a parable?
They tell us that no matter how long we have been lost we have been in son or no matter how far away we have strayed away from our path towards God, it's never too late to turn our hearts back toward God.
What do the parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son tell us about the Kingdom of God.
He asks the man to sell what he has and to give his possessions to the poor because his wealth and possessions stand in his way of further growth in holiness.
What does Jesus ask the rich man to do to inherit eternal life? Why?
Love the Lord, your God, with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. & You shall love your neighbor as yourself
What are the Greatest Commandments?
-first commandment- embraces faith, hope, and charity. we are to believe and hope in God, loving him above all else.
-second- we are to speak God's name only in reverence, love and respect
-third- respect sunday by participating in the celebration of the Eucharist.
What do the first 3 commandments tell us about loving God?
We must actively love the poor if we want to enter his kingdom.
At the Last Judgement, what is the standard by which all people will be judged?
It describes the Parousia. Serving the least, we are serving Jesus. Ignoring the least, is ignoring Jesus.
What is the significance of Jesus' teaching the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats shortly before his Passion?
charitable acts by which we come to the air of our neighbor, attending to both spiritual and bodily necessities.
What are the works of mercy?
we have a fundamental dignity and we are predestined to reproduce the image of God's Son made man, the image of the invisible God.
what does it mean that human beings are made in God's image?
he is the perfect man who invites us to become his disciple and follow him. by humbling himself he has given us an example to imitate, through his prayer he draws us to pray, and by his poverty he calls us to accept freely the privation and persecutions that may come our way.
how is jesus a model of full humanity for us?
we are given intellect as a sharing in the light of the divine mind and to attempt to search out the secrets of the material sciences and pursue the truths of a higher order. wisdom ultimately leads to God. free will is used to chose our own path in life. god wants us to make good, morally correct designs, but he doesn't not force us because he loves us.

Jesus modeled love by loving all others. as a teacher he loved by speaking the truth. as a healer he loved by giving sight to the blind, making the lame walk, the deaf hear, and dead rise. as one as the word of God made flesh he loved by seeking out those who were excluded or forgotten. mostly, he loved by giving himself full through his passion, death, and resurrection.
how did jesus model love for us?
We are to love one another as God loves us. "...love one another, as I love you."
How does Jesus want us to love?
it reminds us that we are never to exploit creation or use it for our benefit only. we must safeguard it in a way that acknowledges its goodness and preserves it for future generations. God has commanded us to care for that which is a gift to us.
In what ways does stewardship describe the relationship humans are to have with the earth?
-we are created as good
-we are in need of salvation
-we are meant for eternal life in the glory of God's holy presence
What three basic truths are at the heart of human dignity?
we are in need of redemption because of the fall, original sin transmitted to every person born in the world. we have entered a wounded world that is inclined to sin.
God created humans good, so why do we need redemption?
this means that we cannot treat people as objects or use them for our own purposes. we need to treat every person with respect, care, and compassion
What is significant in that a person is "not just something, but someone"?
he engages in a lengthy discussion w a samaritan woman even though other jews rejected that group of people. he healed a roman official even though the romans were hated by the jews. he curses the daughter of a canaanite woman even though his disciples urge him to send her away.
describe how Jesus respected the dignity of others during his earthly ministry.
he gives us back what had been lost by sin because he is the image of the invisible God and we are inwardly renewed when we become like him.
how does jesus restore what was lost through sin?

in Genesis God creates the first person, adam. he declares that it is not good for the man to be alone and on the fourth day creates another person whom adam welcomes as bone of my bones/flesh of my flesh

we both possess an inalienable dignity which comes to us immediately from God, our creator. We are also all created in the image and likeness of God. We are equal in our dignity, our rights, and in our capacity to be signs of God' presence in the world.
even though men and women are physically different, how are they created equal?
We must respect human life in all of its forms. it is the reverence for and protection of human life.
what is the consistent ethic of life?
abortion is the ending of life of the most vulnerable individual of society, the developing child in a mother's womb.
euthanasia is a direct action, or deliberate and purposeful lack of action, that causes the death of a person who is disables, sick, or dying. They are both wrong because all human life is sacred. It is not up to us whether we should end the life of another human, it is God's decision only.
