Was a woman of color who often could not afford dance classes, and the ones she could, she was often not allowed into because of her skin color. The teachers were afraid having a person of color in their classes would drive away the well paying white customers. Eventually, she began working with the Denishawn company, but only as a seamstress and private assistant because it was uncommon to have a person of color as a dancer within the company. Eventually she quit the company because Ruth St. Denis could not support her when they toured in the south, she refused to fight for Guy to be housed in the same hotels, or downgrade their own hotels to stay with her when they traveled.
Ted Shawn
A gay male who found ballroom dance a stamina builder and strength recovery activity after recovering from diphtheria and being paralyzed. He married and established female choreographer and began a company with her in order to keep up appearances that he was a straight male, since being gay was seen as a gender inversion at the time and his work would not have been taken seriously if he was seen in that light. Focused mainly on very masculine dancers with athletic builds to portray the power of white men.
