Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry: Tests for Ions & Gases
Text is lifted from and copyright of "Specification and Pupil Learning Outcomes Lists"and Chapter 16 of Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry Revision Guide. Good luck.

What colour do Lithium ions burn?
What colour do Potassium ions burn?
What colour do Calcium ions burn?
What colour do Sodium ions burn?
Yellow / Orange
How could Ammonium ions be tested for?
Add aqueous sodium hydroxide to the solid, or solution, under test and warm the mixture. If ammonium ions are present, then a pungent smelling gas is produced. The gas produced turns damp red litmus paper blue - it is Ammonia.
What reaction do copper (II) ions give with aqueous sodium hydroxide?
What reaction do iron (II) ions give with aqueous sodium hydroxide?
What reaction do iron (III) ions give with aqueous sodium hydroxide?
What precipitate is given from silver nitrate solution and chloride ions?
What precipitate is given from silver nitrate solution and bromide ions?
What precipitate is given from silver nitrate solution and iodide ions?
Describe an experiment to find carbonate ions using dilute acid.
To either solid, or an aqueous solution of the solid, under test add dilute hydrochloric (or nitric) acid. If carbonate is there, there will be bubbles of gas which turn limewater milky.
Describe a test for Sulfate ions with barium chloride solution.
To an aqueous solution of the solid under test, add dilute hydrochloric acid followed by a few drops of barium chloride solution. There will be a white precipitate.
What is the test for hydrogen?
Mix hydrogen gas with air - it burns with a squeaky pop.
What is the test for oxygen?
A glowing spill relights in oxygen.
What is the test for carbon dioxide?
Bubble carbon dioxide through water, and the limewater turns milky.
What are the tests for chlorine?
Chlorine turns damp litmus paper white or moist starch-iodine paper blue.
What are the tests for ammonia?
Ammonia turns damp red litmus paper blue or damp universal indicator paper purple.
