1st stage of Islamic presence in America: The West African Civilization
About 10-12th century AD.
This is documented through 10th century geographers and historians who visited the area and wrote about their journeys. There are maps identifying South america as "the unknown land" Arabic inscriptions on rocks in the western part of the US 9especially in Inyo country) which were discovered by American archeologists, Museaum curators, and real estate developers. Such inscriptions stated: Jesus Son of Mary (this is usually how Muslims refer to Jesus), Muhammad Messenger of God, There is no deity except God and muhammad is his messenger (which is the declaration of faith for Muslims) Other evidence of Pre-Columbus Islam in America is found in the memoirs of Columbus himself, related to structures he found that looked like mosques, people who prayed like Muslims in Spain
2nd stage of Islamic presence in America: Sailing with Columbus
Sailors and navigators who came with Columbus himself. We know this through Columbus own memoirs and the writing of other historians who documented the expeditions to the new world
3rd state of Islamic presence in America: Slave Trade
The slave trade from Africa which contained about 20-30% muslims. Most Muslims were forced to convert to Christianity in North America because their Masters forced them to, while many of them stayed Muslims in the Caribbean and Ventral and South America. We know this through repatriation (slaves that were freed, went back to Africa, and wrote about their experience), we know this also from portraits in American Museums identifying slaves who refused to eat pork, who recited the Qur'an and prayed five times a day, we also know it from historians like alex Haley's famous "Roots" book and later on TV series, which traced Kunta Kinte to his Islamic origins.
4th stage of Islamic presence in AmericaL Immigrants and some converts
White Converts (Americans like Muhammad Alexander Webb who published a newspaper about Islam) and migration of European Muslims: (Albanians, Bosnians, in the mid-1800s) Eurpoean Muslims are the first to land in the US in large numbers among the flow of immigrants (of course, Muslim slaves from Africa came before them but not as immigrants) European Muslim slaves from Africa came before them but not as immigrants)
5th stage of Islamic presence in America: Immigrants and Nation of Islam
The rise of the Nation of Islam 1940s-1960s. Most followers of the Nation of Islam (which was more racial than Islamic) changed to mainstream Islam after Malcom X broke away from the Nation of Islam in the 1960s and after the leader of the Nation of Islam's own son. W.D. Muhammad also separated from the Nation. WD Muhammad just died in 2008.
6th stage: inflow of students- from the Muslim world
Students from many parts of the world, including the Muslim world sought higher education in the U.S. Europe and Canada. Some of them eded up set line in these regions. This period was also known as the "Braindrain" from developing nations to the West. This was partially due to the US expanding its influence worldwide to combat the threat of the Soviet Union that was also recruiting educated students from the developing world during the cold war era
7th stage of Islamic presence in America: 1990s-present
Aside from the groups above, during the past 25 years, most new Muslims in the US are NOT of slave origin (Africa) not immigrants nor students nor converts from a particular ethnic minority. They are either newly converts to Islam from all segments of the American population or children/grandchildren of immigrants
