Archipelago
A group of islands
Bay
Part of a large body of water that extends into a shoreline, generally smaller than a gulf
Canal
An artificial waterway or artificially improved river used for travel, shipping, or irrigation
Cape
Point of land that extends into a river, lake, or ocean
Delta
Flat, low-lying land built up from soil carried downstream by a river and deposited at its mouth
Desert
A large land area that receives very little rainfall
Fjord
Narrow, U-shaped coastal valley with steep sides formed by the action of glaciers
Gulf
A large part of an ocean or a sea that lies within a curved coastline. It is larger than a bay.
Harbor
A sheltered body of water where ships can safely anchor
Island
A piece of land that is surrounded by water
Isthmus
A narrow stretch of land connecting two larger land areas
Lake
A body of water completely surrounded by land, usually freshwater
Lock
A section of a waterway, such as a canal, closed off with gates, in which vessels are raised or lowered by changing the water level of that section
Mountain
Land that steeply rises much higher than the land around it.
Mountain Range
A row of mountains joined together
Mouth
The place where a stream or river flows into a larger body of water
Peninsula
A body of land jutting into a lake or ocean, surrounded on three sides by water and generally larger than a cape
Plain
A large, flat land area
Plateau
A large area of raised land where the highest elevation is generally the same, but may have deep valleys
River
A body of fresh water that flows from higher to lower land, usually into a river, lake, sea, or ocean
Sea
A large body of salt water nearly or partly surrounded by land, and much smaller than an ocean
Source
The place where a stream or river begins, often in highlands
Strait
A narrow stretch of water joining two larger bodies of water
Tributary
Small river that flows into a larger river
Valley
Lower land between hills or mountains
