# Equations

These cards give you rules to solving equations as well as practice problems that have the answers on the back. One and Two Step Equations are presented here.

#### Terms in this set (...)

To solve an equation you must......
Get the variable alone
To get the variable alone you must.....
Get rid of the things on the variable side
To get rid of addition you must.......
Subtract on BOTH sides of the equation
To get rid of subtraction you must......
Add on BOTH sides of the equation
To get rid of division you must.....
Multiply on BOTH sides of the equation
To get rid of multiplication you must....
Divide on BOTH sides of the equation
x + 7 = 12
Subtract 7 from both sides leaving you with
x = 5
x - 8 = 17
Add 8 to both sides leaving you with
x = 25
x/3 = 6
Multiply 3 on both sides leaving you with
x = 18
4x = 12
Divide 4 on both sides leaving you with
x = 3
Two step equations mean you must.....
Get rid of the addition or subtraction first and then get rid of the multiplication or division (by doing the opposite on both sides)
3x + 12 = 36
Subtract 12 from both sides and get
3x = 24
Then divide by 3 on both sides and get
x = 8
4x - 15 = 17
First you must add 15 to both sides to get
4x = 32
Then divide both sides by 4 and get
x = 8
7 - x/2 = 17
First you must get rid of positive seven (be careful this does not say - 7 so to get rid of positive 7 you must subtract 7 from both sides to get -x/2 = 10
To get rid of the 2 you must multiply both sides by 2
-x = -5
You cannot have a negative variable so change signs on both sides of the equation
x = 5
9 + x/3 = 21
First you must get rid of the positive 9 by subtracting 9 from both sides to get
x/3 = 12
Then you must get rid of 3 so you must multiply both sides by 3 to get
x = 36
x - 6 = 8
x = 14
4 - x = 15
x = -11
-8x = 64
x = -8
6x - 13 = 23
x = 6
x/3 - 9 = 2
x = 33
x/-2 - 15 = 15
x = -15
18 = 6x
x = 3
20 = 3x + 2
x = 6
8 = x/3 - 7
x = 45
98 = 12x + 2
x = 8
