Step one
Adjust the left ocular setting to zero (or appropriate compensation).

Swing the lowest power objective (4x; scanning objective) into the view setting.

Close the diaphragm.

Move the condenser to its topmost position. Some microscopes have condensers which touch the slide due to miscalibration. If this is the case, simply move the condenser down JUST until the slide is not contacted.

Adjust the light intensity knob to maximally balance resolution and contrast.

Bring the stage down to its lowest position, taking care to not to make contact with the light source.
