Infoway has the mandate to develop a pan-Canadian iEHR and to invest in strategies that advance this initiative

Infoway leads pan-Canadian standards development, and has developed a collaborative process with CIHI and other stakeholders

Infoway and CIHI have a memorandum of understanding detailing their relationship in developing and maintaining iEHR standards

In this relationship, Infoway is the 'catalyst' for development of EHR standards, and is overall program manager for EHR standards work

CIHI is the 'preferred partner' to Infoway in the development of standards, and will continue to be responsible for data definitions, content standards, and classification systems which are core to their business

Infoway has stated the need for standards in the iEHR: "interoperability between diverse care settings, information systems, and jurisdictions cannot possibly occur without a clearly defined set of common standards"1 Given this, they lead many standards development processes.

Infoway has stated the need for standards in the iEHR: "interoperability between diverse care settings, information systems, and jurisdictions cannot possibly occur without a clearly defined set of common standards"1 Given this, they lead many standards development processes.

In the Infoway CIHI relationship, Infoway will alert stakeholders of new or changing standards, and will fund the processes to adopt or adapt these standards, or develop new standards. They fund iEHR initiatives across Canada, and therefore 'manages' implementation whereas CIHI will develop/manage those standards with which they have the expertise: classifications (ICD/CCI), data definitions, content standards.
