Intralesional Corticosteroids:
- triamcinolone acetonide 5-10 mg q2 weeks or every 4-6 weeks
- 0.1 mL into multiple sites at 1 cm apart into the deep dermis (max volume of 20 mL)

Hydrocortisone:
- 25 mg/mL
- ADRs: pain at injection sites, localized skin atrophy, and hypopigmentation

**relapses are common with treatment discontinuation

Topical Corticosteroids:
- clobetasol propionate used under occlusion

Systemic Corticosteroids:
- pulse dosing used to minimize ADRs
- prednisone 0.5 mg/kg/day x 3 months
- prednisolone 200 mg once weekly x 3 months
- dexamethasone 0.1 mg/kg/day on 2 consecutive days once weekly. for at least 4 months
common causes of alopecia- pregnancy - psychological stress - fever, infection, hemorrhage, surgery - weight loss - autoimmune diseases (most often SLE and thyroid hormone deficiency) - localized telogen effluvium following hair transplantation - vitamin/mineral deficiency (most commonly iron in women) - contraceptives, anticoagulants, anticonvulsants, isotretinoin, warfarin
