Why do poets use assonance?
Poets use it to make phrases sound smoother.
What is alliteration?
Repetition of the same beginning consonant
For example "Peter Piper picked a peck of picked peppers"
What is assonance?
The repetition of the same vowel sound, like "how now brown cow"
What is hyperbole?
An exaggeration of the truth. Example: Ari was in the shower for a thousand years.
What is a line break?
Where a line of poetry ends in the middle of a sentence and flows into the next line.
What is an onomatopoeia?
Word that sounds like the sound it makes in real life: splat, sizzle, whisper
What is a metaphor?
A comparison between two things:
My heart is broken
My father is the rock of the family.

When each line of poetry ends with the same sound.
What is imagery?
Language that uses the five senses.
What is a simile?
A comparison between two things that uses "like," "as" or, "than"
What is personification?
To describe human qualities in a non-human object.
For example, writing about a tree as if it has emotions.
What is a stanza?
A paragraph of a poem.
What is symbolism?
When an object represents something else.
