Physically Combined
the way in which materials are combined to make a mixture; the parts/materials simply blend together, without forming a new substance.
Chemically Combined
The way in which materials are combined to make a completely new substance called a compound
Mixture
a physical combination of two or more substances that are blended together without forming a new substance; the materials keep their original properties. It can contain different amounts of materials that make it up.
Homogeneous Mixture
This is what you call it when a mixture is completely blended, and it looks the same throughout, also called a solution.
Solutions
a mixture of substances that are blended so completely that it looks the same everywhere; consists of at least one solute and one solvent; also called a homegenous mixture
Heterogeneous Mixture
this is what you call it when a mixture is only partially blended, and the mixture may look "speckled"
Colloids
a special type of mixture in which the particles of one material are scattered through another and block the passage of light without settling out; has the properties in between those of solutions and heterogeneous mixtures. There are many different types: emulsion, aerosol, gel, and foam.
Solute
A substance that is dissolved by another substance to form a solution; the substance that makes up the smaller part of a solution
Solvent
A substance that dissolves one or more other substances to form a solution; the substance that makes up the largest part of a solution.
Solubility
the ability of a substance to be dissolved by another substance
Suspensions
mixtures in which suspended particles can easily be seen
Emulsion
A type of colloid in which one liquid is spread throughout another.
Aerosol
A type of colloid in which liquid drops or solid particles are spread throughout a gas
Gel
A type of colloid in which a solid is spread throughout a liquid
Foam
a type of colloid in which a gas is spread throughout a liquid
Physical Separation
a method used to separate the parts of mixtures without changing their identities
Distillation
the process of separating the parts of a mixture by evaporation and condensation.
