Four weapon safety rules
Treat every weapon as if it were loaded
Never point a weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot
Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to fire
Keep weapon on safe until you are ready to fire

Immediate Actions
Are the prompt actions taken by the user to correct the stoppage.
Tactical Immediate actions for, M9 failure to fire when the slide is fully forward.
- ensure the safety is in the fire position
- ensure the magazine is fully seated; retract the slide to the rear and release.
- if still does not fire, remove magazine and eject the round in chamber, insert new magazine, chamber new round and attempt to fire.
Non-tactical Immediate actions for, M9 failure to fire when the slide is fully forward
clear/unload the M9
Immediate actions for when slide is not fully seated forward
- remove finger from trigger and attempt to push slide forward with non firing hand.
if slide will not move:
- place weapon on safe.
- remove magazine
- retract slide to the rear and lock it with slide lock
- inspect chamber and bore and remove any obstructions
- insert a loaded magazine and release slide
- place weapon on fire, sight in and attempt to fire

Immediate action and remedial actions for M16A and M4
Tap - Rack - Bang.
- slap upward on the magazine
- pull the charging handle all the way to the rear, observing the ejection of the case or cartridge.
- if chamber is clear, release charging handle feeding new round into the chamber.
- tap the forward assist

Malfunction
is a failure of the machine gun to function satisfactory

Sluggish operation and run away gun
Sluggish operation
gun fires very slowly, due to excessive friction from lack of lubrication or excessive dirt or carbon or loss of gas from a loose connection in the gas system
Action of loss of gas
move regulator setting to the number two or three position
clean, inspect, and lube the gun
Runaway gun
caused when a gun continues to fire after you release the trigger caused by worn, broken, or burred sear notch
methods when you have a runaway gun
keep down range and either let weapon fire off remaining rounds or break the belt of ammunition by twisting it
hang fire
occurs when the primer detonates but a problem occurs with the propellant that cause a slow burn and a delay in firing.
cook off
occurs when the heat of the barrel is high enough to cause the propellant to ignite in the cartridge with out the primer being hit by the firing pin
