Blood tests show whether or not she has a certain protein - knowing the presence or absence of this protein is important - if the mother's blood does not have the protein and fetus' blood does, the mother's blood builds up antibodies that attack the protein in the fetus' blood this does not affect a first pregnancy, but it can endanger any future pregnancies. The mother can receive an injection that will prevent the antibodies from forming this protecting any Rh positive fetus.
