What is the relationship model?
It is a model that replaced the quantitative approach to defining a substance use disorder. It specifically looks at the relationship between the substance and its user, and places emphasis on any patterns that cause distress or impairment.
Difference between substance abuse and substance dependance?
SA is less severe and can lead to SD. SA only consists of continued use of substance despite negative consequences. SD has all 3 "C's" and can yield physiological dependence
The 3 C's of Substance Disorders
1) Continued Use despite negative consequences
2) Compulsive Use
3) Loss of control over use
Difference between tolerance and withdrawal?
Tolerance- Body's adaptation to substance that requires higher amounts to achieve desired effect
Withdrawal- physical or psychological symptoms that occur when substance use is decreased or stopped
Polysubstance abuse
3 or more substances are misused
Depressants include
Alcohol, Sedative Hypnotics, Opioids
Stimulants
Cocaine, Amphetamines, Nicotine, Caffeine
Hallucinogens
LSD, Psilocybin, Mescaline
Anxiolytic
Anxiety reducing effect
