spore
A small reproductive structure often forcibly ejected into the air. Once dispersed a spore can then germinate into a sporeling (a young fungus).
hygroscopic
Hygroscopy is the ability to attract and retain water molecules.
decompose
To become rotten or decay. Fungi aid in decomposition by producing chemicals that break down structures, cells, and large molecules.
fungi
A kingdom of organisms with shared characteristics between plants (cell walls) and animals (relying on preformed organic compounds for nutrients).
puffballs
A large group of fungi which produce spores internally in a spheroidal fruiting body.
stroma
A mass of fungal hyphae in which reproductive structures can develop.
peridium
The protective layer of a fungus containing a mass of spores.
hyphae
Fungal filaments that comprise the body of a fungus.
