A book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was an antislavery novel then angered the southern slave owners. The north people realized the evils of slavery from the book.

Formed the territories of Kansas and Nebraska and popular sovereignty determines whether they were free or not. Anti and pro slavery groups tried to settle in Kansas. This act divided the north and the south on the issue of slavery.

4 sons and John Brown murder five pro slavery men in the Pottawatomie massacre. About 200 men were killed in Kansas.
What was the Brooks/Sumner attack in the senate?
Brooks from South Carolina beats Sumner of Massachusetts bloody on the floor of the Senate. This boosted southern morale.
What was the Dred Scott decision?
The Supreme Court says that slaves are considered property and cannot sue. They have no rights as humans because they arent citizens under the Constitution. The line from the Missouri Compromise is unconstitutional. The north is upset because slavery can spread further north.
What was the Lincoln and Douglas debate?
A series of debates in Illinois. Lincoln said that slavery is totally wrong but blacks arent equal. Douglas said that if Lincoln made all states free than it would lead to the destruction of the Union.
What was the Attack at Harpers Ferry?
John Brown wanted to arm slaves and start a revolution to end slavery. This caused a rally of white people to abolish slavery. John Brown was hung and convicted of treason, murder and in sighting a slave rebellion.
What was the formation of the Confederacy?
Lincoln is elected first republican president but the southern states refuse to vote for him because they don't want him to get rid of slavery. South Carolina secedes. After that Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas secede and form their own Confederate States of America. Jefferson Davis becomes the president of the confederate states.
