She sets up an archery challenge that requires the suitors to take turns stringing Odysseus' bow and then shoot an arrow through twelve sockets. The task is very difficult; and one-by-one the suitors all try and fail. Then Odysseus, still disguised as a beggar, asks for a turn. He is granted a turn. Before he begins stringing his bow, many of the suitors make fun of him and the careful attention he pays to stringing the bow. He skillfully strings the bow effortlessly like a musician would string his or her instrument. This amazes the suitors. With one shot, Odysseus shoots his arrow straight through the twelve sockets without brushing a single one.
After Odysseus wins the challenge, he hears a crake of thunder over head, the sign from Zeus to take his revenge on the suitors. Odysseus lets fly an arrow straight for Antinous, killing him instantly. The suitors yell at Odysseus thinking the arrow was accidental. He then proclaims that the arrow was no accident and that he is Odysseus returned. He tells all the suitors they will suffer for overrunning his home, trying to steal his wife, and plotting to kill his son. One of the suitors speaks up telling Odysseus that Antinous was the leader and he had paid for his arrogance. He asks Odysseus to spare the other men with a promise that they will all repay what they have taken from Odysseus plus some. Odysseus does not even consider this promise, but instead tells them they must all pay. He begins to kill the suitors with the arrows. While he is doing this, Telemachus goes to get weapons and shields for he and Odysseus. He returns just as Odysseus runs out of arrows. Together with Zeus and Athena, Odysseus and Telemachus are able to defeat all the suitors.
summary of "Penelope's Test"
Odysseus has proclaimed his return. Penelope, being cautious, devises a test for this man who claims to be Odysseus. He questions why she still remains cold to him and has not welcomed him home warmly. She tells him that she has hardened her heart long ago to those who claim to be Odysseus because she does not want to help hopeful for his return and then find out she has been deceived. She tells the "stranger" that she will have her bed moved outside the bed chamber so that he may sleep that night. At this comment, Odysseus becomes angry. He says that the only way the bed can be moved is if some other person has been in the bedroom and cut the bed apart from its place. He describes for Penelope how he built the bedroom around an olive tree growing through the room. He shaped the trunk of the tree as one of the bedposts and then created three additional bedposts to match. He then made their bed with this tree trunk one of the bedposts, thus making it impossible to move the bed. This information is something only Odysseus knows because no other person has been in their bedroom. This is Penelope's test. Odysseus responds to it the way Penelope hoped he would. She then throws her arms around her husband telling him what she was doing by suggesting the bed be moved. They both weep in happiness at being together again after 20 years.
