Plot

the sequence of events in a story.
Exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, AND resolution

Exposition

introduces the characters, basic situations, and setting
Example:
Time: first day of school
Place: Mr. Gerdes's classroom
Protagonist: student in Mr. Gerdes's classroom (typically has a name)
Antagonist: student does not like English class, no matter what teacher teaches it
Conflict: Student has to pass Mr. Gerdes's class whether he or she likes it or not to move on to the next grade

Internal Conflict

the protagonist's major struggle is a choice he or she must make
Example: a teacher having to remain calm and NOT physically discipline a child

External Conflict

the protagonist's major struggle is against a force outside of him or herself
Example: the teacher hits the child (man vs. man)

Setting

when and/or where a story takes place
Example: this summer, anywhere that is not school, but more specifically... at the beach
