Radiation Dose Response Curve
Used to represent the dose received and the effects of that exposure to human tissue
Dose goes up
the effects also increase
Straight Line is considered
Linear
Deterministic
You will get it with that certain dose
Probabilistic
Increase the chance but might not get it
Threshold
a point at which a biologic response occurs. Implies that there is a "safe" amount of dose to be delivered
Non Threshold
any radiation exposure can be harmful and cause a response in the body. Implies that there is no safe level of exposure
Linear Curves
the dose and effects are directly proportional - as dose increase the severity of the effects increase
Sigmoid Curve
the body is able to recover from the effects until it is overwhelmed and dies - used to describe radiation therapy effects
Linear Quadratic Curve
the body is able to recover at lower levels of dose - only at higher levels do the effects become proportional
Ex of nonstochastic threshold
ARS, Cataractogenesis, and Sterility
Ex of stochatstic no threshold
Carcinogenesis and Mutations
Late Somatic Effects
Appears months or years after exposure. Can be stochastic and non stochastic
Cataractogenesis
200 rads is the threshold dose and follows a non linear threshold curve
Embryonic Effects
First Trimester is the most radiosensitive period especially 10 days to 6 weeks after conception
How much rem can cause Embryonic Demise or other congenial effects
20 rem
Mutations can double at what dose?
156 or 1.56 Sieverts
